America, Here I Come!

Meet Anna and her brother Artem and follow a family through a move to the United States of America! When Anna’s father tells her they are moving, her life is changed forever. How can this be? Anna must stay strong. This means starting a new school and making new friends. Can she learn to open her heart, share herself, and accept others in return? America, Here I Come! was written with the help of actual Wake County students who recently moved to the United States of America from other countries. The story emphasizes vocabulary enrichment, social development and multicultural awareness. It is the first of a series of books featuring the “America, Here I Come!” theme.

Kyra Burton worked as a second grade classroom teacher in Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools for 4 years and as an ESL Instructor for Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools for 4 summer school sessions. After moving to South Florida to work in educational programming for television and living there for many years, Kyra recently moved back to Raleigh, North Carolina to be closer to family. She is currently a television writer and a volunteer ESL Instructor for the City of Raleigh. Her book "America, Here I Come!" encourages questioning and openness, along with acceptance of one's own feelings. It allows children the opportunity to delve into the experience of moving to the United States. This is her first children's book.
