North Carolina is a place where history has been enriched by legends and folklore. The 48 colorful Tar Heel tales in this volume include such well-known stories as “Virginia Dare and the White Doe” and “Old Dan Tucker” and such lesser known yarns as “The Portrait of Theodosia Burr” and “Bladenboro’s Vamire Beast.” Striking drawings by Bill Ballard, one for each tale, bring North Carolina’s mythical past to life.
Richard Walser (1908-1988) was a champion of North Carolina’s literary heritage. He earned an M.A. at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. After military service in World War II, Mr. Walser served as professor of English at North Carolina State University from 1946 to 1970. During his teaching career and after, he authored/edited more than thirty books on a variety of North Carolina literary subjects.
